[How to Get 'A Head']

By Jaqueline Afonso

Pictures are worth a thousand words but not a thousand dollars. Headshots can be expensive. The price depends on the photographer you choose and the number of prints you need. If you want to pursue work in front of the camera, you should invest in headshots.

Most headshots are just that: they’re a head or head and shoulders shot of a person. The typical format is an 8 x 10 black and white picture. Headshots can range anywhere from $200 to $500. The price may include rolls of film, hair and makeup, and proofs.

Helen Tansey, a Toronto-based photographer, suggests bringing an assortment of clothes to the shoot. Your wardrobe should reflect your diverse style. Make sure you bring casual, business and trendy clothes.

Tansey recommends film and television professionals – actors, TV anchors, reporters, directors and writers – stick to a standard black or dark coloured top.

An average headshot session runs 90 minutes to two hours, Tansey says, depending on the number of wardrobe changes.

Headshots put a face to your resumé and help you get noticed in the film and television industry. Remember, a professional picture requires a professional photographer. A $3 picture from a photo-booth is not going to get you that job.
