[How to Make a Pillowcase]

By Jennifer Goldberg

Set decorators have to work within the director’s vision. You might be asked to re-cover a fabulous piece of furniture to fit in with the film’s colour palette. That’s why Gord Sim says a basic knowledge of upholstery is key to being good at his job.

Try your hand at upholstery by making a simple pillow cover. Here are six easy steps to get you started.

What you’ll need:
2 squares of fabric
1 spool of thread to match
1 sewing needle
1 old cushion or pillow stuffing
1 roll tissue paper
ruler
pencil
scissors

  1. Measure out a square to fit desired pillow size and draw on tissue paper. Make sure to add an extra quarter inch on each side to allow for seams.
  2. Cut out paper and pin to fabric. Cut around perimeter of square to get two pieces (front and back of pillow)
  3. Put fabric faces together so the pillow looks like it’s inside out. Pin at corners making sure pieces line up correctly.
  4. Sew around three sides. Be sure to fortify the seams at each corner.
  5. Turn pillow right side outand stuff with batting or old pillow.
  6. Sew the fourth side closed.
