[2005 Bessie Winner]

By Mary Bonnici

The Bessies is an annual TV commercial competition organized by the Television Bureau of Canada in association with the Broadcast Executives Society. In 2004, The Bessies celebrated 41 years of recognizing the finest in Canadian television advertising. Entries are accepted from individuals or groups within advertising agencies, production houses, television stations and advertisers.

The competition is open to all television commercials created for a Canadian viewing audience, originated by an agency/production facility incorporated in Canada. To be eligible, entries must have been telecast in the exact and complete format in which they were submitted.

The Bessies recognize professional achievement and award recipients with The Walter Bell Memorial Award. Bell was a creative veteran and highly regarded in the advertising industry for his writing.

The award provides creative opportunities to a graduating copywriting student who exhibits exemplary writing skills and humane qualities. It includes a bursary and paid internship. The 2005 award went to Amy Maloney from the Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning.
